Still part of the sub-access trail to the Appalachian Trail, the trailhead is marked at the Byron Herbert Reece Memorial where Flat Rock Gap is situated. Byron Herbert was a Pulitzer Prize nominee who is a native of Union County and was popularly known for his poetry and novels. The trail is set within the forest of Blood Mountain.
